Why is suicide awareness important in the workplace?
Suicide prevention training in the workplace is essential for fostering a supportive environment and addressing the mental health crisis that affects many employees. According to The Samaritans, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the UK, with approximately 5,000 people dying by suicide each year (Samaritans). Workplace suicide awareness and intervention training can save lives by helping employees identify warning signs, understand mental health conditions, and know how to intervene.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reports that work-related stress, anxiety, and depression account for a significant portion of mental health issues in the workplace. In fact, in 2020/21, 822,000 workers in the UK were affected by work-related stress, depression, or anxiety (HSE). These conditions can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours, underscoring the need for employers to provide training to staff so they can offer support to colleagues in need.
Mind highlights that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, and 1 in 5 employees reports experiencing mental health issues due to work pressures (Mind). This makes it clear that the workplace is an important space to implement suicide prevention strategies, as employees are often spending the majority of their waking hours in a work environment. Having trained personnel available who can identify risk factors and offer initial support is crucial in reducing suicides and improving mental health outcomes in the workplace.
Furthermore, ACAS notes that workplaces that promote mental health and provide appropriate training are not only saving lives but are also improving employee morale, reducing absenteeism, and increasing overall productivity. Supportive work environments lead to a healthier workforce and better retention rates, while also reducing the economic burden on businesses from stress-related absenteeism (ACAS).
By integrating suicide prevention training into workplace mental health initiatives, employers can provide crucial support to employees, fostering a culture of openness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues. This proactive approach ensures employees feel safe and supported, which can lead to significant improvements in both individual wellbeing and overall business performance.
